#### Backstory
Likely born sometime between 1461-1463 DR, not much is known of his early years. Dumal (named after First Guardian Dumal Erard, one of the founders of Helm's Hold during the 14th century DR) grew up in the orphanage in the Cathedral of Helm. Surrounded by magic and piety throughout his upbringing, but also by the suffering of the numerous unfortunate fates that he met in the orphanage and the hospital wards - his kindhearted and curious nature turned him into a good student and zealous devotee of Helm in his early years. But that same curiosity made it insufferable to not get any good or consistent answer from the cathedral's elders as to how he got here in the first place. It led him to believe that there were something they didn't want him to know, and reoccurring dreams of being abducted plagued much of his youth, gradually seeking out the world outside the cathedral more and more, perhaps in a desperate attempt to find some clue of his half-elf heritage. In one of his many youthful adventures in Neverwinter, he saved the life of a dragonborn named Preltel Durdaar, who was severely maimed after being robbed by local thugs. This would spark the start of a friendship that gradually made Dumal feel more at home in the local dragonborn community in Neverwinter, then in the cathedral he was raised.
During Rohini's gradual infiltration of the cathedral - who turned out to be a succubus and the leader of the Ashmadai in 1479 DR - Dumal had already long settled down in Neverwinter, honing his skills as a healer in the Arcanist Quarter. This would all change though, when Preltel was murdered in cold blood. The evidence seemed to point back to Dumal - leading to a brawl, forcing him to flee Neverwinter, leaving the closest thing he had to a family behind, taking only the grief of losing his best friend with him. Confused, injured, bewildered, and too scared to seek refuge in the cathedral, he had a delirious vision on the High Road south. A being he could only believe to be Helm spoke to him, before waking up in Baldur's Gate. He stumbled around for days in a delirious haze, seemingly living on religious zeal alone, before finding refuge in Twin Songs for a few weeks, regaining his strength and acquiring basic equipment, but where do you go when you suddenly just find yourself in a new city, with no explanation as to why you got there, and you believe the only reason you could be there is that you're somehow sent there on a holy mission that you don't even know the nature of? That you should have been dead, but have been called upon to finish a mission from the heavens?
He never found any answer to where he came from during his upbringing, he lost the only true family he ever knew, but this miracle that saved his life truly reinforced that the one solid pillar in his life was Helm. Who or what brought him all the way from the High Road, and why? Maybe his reoccurring visions will give some kind of clue, but it's clear that there is a great evil festering in the city of Baldur's Gate, and right now his only clue is to find his way back to where he woke up.
Even though he might come across as overzealous and let's face it - borderline crazy - this is not the curious, compassionate, charismatic half-elf that settled in Neverwinter, but merely a scared child unable to grieve, having delusional visions that has no choice but to believe is taking him to somewhere with answers. This could lead him to do or accept morally questionable things he would not have been able to do in the past, only on the basis that it must be part of a greater plan. There's a vast contrast in his confidence, and it pretty much only shines through the moment there is talk about purpose, religion, or there are someone in need of comfort.
Dumal found a pet dog in the orphanage that he to this day regret he didn't take better care of, and swore an oath, at least in his less crazy days, that the next dog he had a bond with, he would not hesitate to give his life for.
He has a mark/scarring underneath his left foot, which he believes to have had as long as he can remember, that some of his old dragonborn friends identified as looking oddly similar to the mark for 'death/dead' in Thieves' Cant. He always found this very funny and ironic, given that he devoted his life to the complete opposite of death, but is now a very touchy subject after escaping Neverwinter.
He is certain that there are secrets hidden in the Cathedral of Helm regarding his origin or who his parents were, but he has over the years slowly tried to accept that the clergy did this in order to protect him - this has however left him with a shattered sense of self and where he comes from. Any attempt to converse about details of his whereabouts will probably not lead to much more than a rough summary, and quickly turn into a conversation of Helm's benevolence.
From living with the dragonborn and being like family to them, he knows several secrets that he almost feel guilty knowing about, especially knowing that they considered oath-breaking the worst of all crimes. One of them is an old sacred family grave, buried deep under an oak tree with Iokharic [i.e. draconic, red.adm.] inscriptions where the road to Triboar meets the Neverwinter Wood, just north of Phandalin.
If not in his over-zealous mood, he might freeze or even faint if he feels very pressured or is yelled at from several people at once. He loves apples, like, a lot.

**RE:** Oath to give his life for the next dog he bounds with, gi Dumal en hell hound puppy?
Why is he marked for death in Thieves’ Cant?

##### Backstory adventure: THE SHIELD OF BAHAMUT’S CHAMPION
The sacred family grave tilhører klanen Preltel.
Kultistene er ikke veldig gode til å lyge, men forsøker å lure Dumal til at i stedet for å sone sin straff, så kan han bli «absolved of all wrongdoing» hvis han kan «retrieve and present to us the artifact resting within the crypt of Clan Preltel … for the good of Neverwinter.»
(Kultistene vet dette, da Durdaar under tortur sier «Kill me if you like! Then you’re sure never to enter the crypt, even if you do ever find it.»
