- Chain: Én eller flere steiner av samme farge inntil hverandre (ikke inkl. diagonaler)
- Liberty: Et åpent punkt inntil en chain (ikke inkl. diagonaler)
- Atari: En chain som bare har én liberty sies å være i atari; denne kan fanges på motstanderens neste tur
- Eye: Kan være real (cannot be challenged) eller fake (can be challenged)
- Alive: Chain has two real eyes. Slike chains er regnet for å være (forholdsvis) trygge.
- Ko: Hvis en capture etterfulgt av en recapture ville ledet til at brettet var i samme konfigurasjon som før den første capturen, er trekket forbudt.
